Sioux Center Municipal Utilities is participating in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) fifth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 5).
What is the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 5)?
The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) requires the EPA to establish criteria for a program to monitor unregulated contaminants in drinking water and to identify contaminants to be monitored every five years. Under UCMR 5, water utilities across the nation monitor unregulated contaminants for one year to help the EPA determine the occurrence of these contaminants in drinking water and whether or not they need to be regulated for the protection of public health.
How is Sioux Center Municipal Utilities Participating?
Sioux Center Municipal Utilities collects samples representing finished water supplied to customers. These are analyzed for 29 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and lithium. This data helps improve the EPA’s understanding of the frequency and levels these are found in the nation’s drinking water systems.
In 2024, the EPA established maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for six PFAS compounds: PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFNA, and HFPO-DA. Sioux Center's 2025 PFAS test results came back as non-detectable.

Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426- 4791).
