Summer Arts and Rec Programs Are a Hit

City News Posted on August 20, 2024

Arts and recreation programs remain a Sioux Center staple with more than 1,200 people involved this summer.

Over 250 people joined Sioux Center Arts programs this year. The Missoula Children’s Theatre performed Treasure Island with the help of 64 Sioux Center kids. Over 100 people participated in drama and art camps and 80 in the Summer Celebration musical, The Sound of Music. This summer’s musical had the largest cast and more people involved than ever before. The Sound of Music sold out all five performances.

“Arts programs develop our creative abilities and strengthen the community with performances we enjoy together,” says Cailan Matthews, the director of Sioux Center Arts. Sioux Center Arts’ mission is to “educate, enlighten, and enrich our community through the arts.”

This summer, more than 1,000 people enjoyed Sioux Center Recreation programs. For kids, options include archery and air rifle; Blastball, KBall, baseball, and softball; cheer; fishing; Jr. Lifeguard; Zumba; nature days; pickleball; basketball; and tennis as well as the Give-It-A-Try-Athlon and a track meet. For adults, offerings are soccer, slowpitch softball, sand volleyball, beginners’ line dance, pickleball, disc golf, and Zumba.

Sioux Center Recreation also hosts the Tour de Sioux Center bicycle ride for kids and adults. About 130 people joined the Tour de Sioux Center this year. The yearly bike ride is free for all ages, with pizza and swimming for participants.

Soccer is Sioux Center’s most popular recreation program. Youth soccer in the spring had about 625 participants, K-6th grade. The summer adult soccer league has 14 teams. KBall, baseball, and softball are also popular with 224 kids involved total and the Live Healthy Iowa track meet with 213.

Zumba and Kids Zumba were new classes this summer. Zumba uses a mix of dances, such as Latin dances and hip-hop, to strengthen cardiovascular health. Sioux Center Recreation pickleball is growing in popularity–20 kids joined, which is more than double two summers ago.

“Rec programs give the community an outlet to be active and play sports or activities and to meet and interact with other people. It helps to learn sports, competition and meet new people,” says Doug Mosher, the director of Sioux Center Recreation.
