Softer Water Allows Sioux Center to Turn Down Softeners

City News Posted on April 27, 2023

Sioux Center’s water users can now dial back their water softeners, thanks to the addition of water from the Lewis & Clark Regional Water System.

Lab testing shows Sioux Center’s current grains of hardness to be 23. Prior to adding Lewis & Clark water into our supply, the hardness was around 43 grains.

The Sioux Center Water Department recommends customers adjust their softeners down to 25 grains of hardness.

“This is great news for all of us,” said Utilities Manager Murray Hulstein. “Turning down our softeners will help us save on salt, water, and sewer use for the softener’s cycle, and decrease overall wear and tear of our softeners.”

Decreasing salt usage in softeners also will decrease the amount of chlorides in our community’s wastewater, which will help the community respond to new DNR requirements for this, Hulstein added.

To adjust a softener, people can consult with their water softener supplier or a local plumber or review their softener’s manual and online information.

The Sioux Center Water Department provides quality water to more than 2,600 customers, drawn from local aquifers and the Lewis & Clark Regional Water System, treated to exceed all federal and state standards.
