Sales Numbers Highlight Local Strength

City News Posted on November 13, 2025

Sioux Center’s taxable sales and the county’s visitor sales showed strong growth in the past year, continuing to stand out in the region and among peers across the state.

From July 2024 to June 2025, Sioux Center’s taxable sales totaled an estimated $252.9 million, according to the Iowa Department of Revenue. This represents a 5.3% increase from last year and the eighth year out of the past decade that the city’s taxable sales have continued to climb.

Sioux Center’s per capita taxable sales far exceed the average for similar sized cities in non-metropolitan counties, according to a report by Iowa State University Extension. Local per-capita sales are 79% higher than the state average and 41% higher than Sioux Center’s city peer group average.

“It’s great to see Sioux Center and our county continue to thrive as a regional hub in northwest Iowa,” said City Manager Scott Wynja. “We are fortunate to have a great business climate and hope to continue to make this a place people want to do business and visit.”

Sioux Center continues to have a strong role in the county, which is strong in the state. Sioux County ranked 14th among Iowa’s 99 counties for taxable sales in fiscal year 2024, according to the most recent statewide report from the Iowa Department of Revenue.

In addition, Sioux County’s visitor sales for 2024 saw an 11.8% increase over the previous year, the highest percent growth among all counties in Iowa. Visitors, defined as those who stayed overnight or traveled more than 50 miles to get here, spent about $56.4 million in Sioux County in 2024, according to an economic impact report through the Iowa Tourism office.

Sioux Center captures trade equivalent to a city with a population of more than 16,000. For the seventh year, Sioux Center’s sales also topped nearby Le Mars, which has a population of more than 10,000. Also, in 2024, Sioux Center saw $21.1 million in new residential construction and $63.8 million in new commercial construction.

“As staff, we use this data to show people, businesses, and developers that are considering Sioux Center that it is a great place to,” Wynja said. “With the obvious amount of development and business activity that is taking place, people and businesses are encouraged by this positive momentum.”

Retail sales, tracked by the Iowa Department of Revenue, reflect sales of goods and services subject to state sales tax. The numbers do not include sales of vehicles, gasoline, purchases for agriculture, most food for home consumption, residential energy, medical services, and other tax-exempt purchases.
