City to Collaborate with DOT on North Stretch of Highway 75

City News Posted on October 08, 2024

The north end of Highway 75 in Sioux Center will be rebuilt to improve safety and function and to reflect the community’s character.

The Iowa Department of Transportation has scheduled complete pavement removal and replacement with concrete in 2027-28 for Highway 75 from 12th St. N (near McDonalds) to Highway 18, near Hull. While this is a DOT project, they are allowing the City to partner in a portion of it to include safety and design features within City limits.

The segment of Highway 75 the City would partner on is between 12th St. N and 20th St. N. That area will have 2 lanes of travel each way plus center turn lanes. Current plans include landscaped medians, streetlights, a paved sidewalk/trail for pedestrians/bikers, and potentially a stoplight at 12th St. N.

“We want it to safely serve the residential and business growth we’re seeing in northern Sioux Center – now and for the future,” said Assistant Utilities Manager Adam Fedders.

The proposed design would mirror the current rebuild of Highway 75 south of 12th St. N to 20th St. S, the 2.5-mile project Sioux Center is already partnering on with the DOT. During joint conversations on this current project, the DOT shared about plans to replace Highway 75 north of 12th St., inviting Sioux Center to be part of design conversations.

“We’re grateful the DOT is allowing us to partner on this,” Fedders said. “This is a state highway and it’s also our main street. Working with the DOT means the end result will fit our growth well and have a unified design from end to end in our community.”

The City Council gave approval Monday to working with the DOT on design of the segment of Highway 75 from just south of 12th St. N to 20th St. S. Construction on that portion is tentatively slated for 2028. The construction from Highway 18 to 20th St. N will likely begin in 2027.

“Collaborating with the DOT on this is another great example of how Sioux Center works toward progress through cooperation,” Mayor Dale Vander Berg said. “Thanks to our City staff for being proactive in this and for setting Sioux Center up well for the future.”
