Construction is underway to improve accessibility and add a modern gathering space to Children’s Park.
The project will include paving a main parking area and adding paved connections to the trail and sidewalks in the park, plus building a climate-controlled, enclosed shelter house with restrooms and a room for Sioux Center Recreation and Arts classes.
The new shelter house will be slightly larger than the current enclosed shelter house, a metal structure with a cedar entranceway and large windows.
“Everything will be ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant to make it accessible, which is the whole plan for the park,” said Parks Director Lee Van Meeteren.
The metal structure will make maintenance simpler, and the space for Recreation and Arts will allow more freedom in scheduling those activities.
JR Construction has already been at work in the park, removing the old bathrooms and one open shelter house and grading to prepare for the new construction. A portion of the recreation trail is currently being detoured around the construction area.
The Sioux Center City Council approved the low bid to construct the shelter house structure last week from JR Construction and its subcontractor Bouma Construction.
“Hopefully we’ll have the shell of the shelter house in before winter time,” Van Meeteren said. “Also this fall, we should have the bike trail section back in place and the parking lot will be paved.”
