Sioux Center Municipal Utilities Recognized for Mutual Aid after Hurricane Irma

Resetting a pole with other trucks in Moore Haven

Sioux Center Municipal Utilities has received a national commendation from the American Public Power Association for its support in electric power restoration efforts in Moore Haven, Florida.

On September 11, 2017, Sioux Center Municipal Utilities sent two linemen to assist Moore Haven, Florida, which suffered a 100 percent power outage as a result of Hurricane Irma.

Troy Kunnari and Ezra Weikert, of Sioux Center, worked with other linemen to reset poles, restring power lines, and make sure connections to each home were safe before restoring power in the community of about 1,800 people.

“As a community-owned utility, we know we’d want others to do the same if our customers here needed help,” said Sioux Center Utility Manager Murray Hulstein. “Mutual aid is one of the strengths of having a municipal utility – in times of need there are hundreds of utilities like ours across the country at the ready to help each other.”

Sioux Center Municipal Utilities participates in the American Public Power Association’s Mutual Aid Network, which coordinates with utilities and authorities during widespread power outages.
